ask: level design tools besides scythe
Honestly, not really. Trenchbroom is a good level design tool, but it’s for BSP based engines where the “turn it into mesh” step is a compile to .bsp, so that’s not very generally applicable. If we’re talking level design tools that output mesh you could use anywhere, there’s basically two: Scythe and Source 2’s Hammer,…

being a level design tooling squeaky wheel: through the ages
It’s now been over 10 years since I started getting a reputation for bitching and moaning about the state of Level Design Tools, starting with my first talk-into-mic youtube video, Level Editing In UE4 Needs To Catch Up To Quake 1, and then a bit later the wider-ranging sequel Ruminations Upon The Insidious Ubiquity Of…

I/O systems for level scripting

a good level design tool finally came out
I’ve been testing a friend’s WIP level design plugin for Unreal for a while now, and while it’s still very early, it’s available now on Patreon and you should support it there. It’s bringing Source 2 style geometry editing to Unreal, allowing level design to properly be a thing again, and I made a video…

half-life alyx’s level design tools are super great
On Twitter once I did a big thread where I went through Half-Life Alyx’s SDK – so this is Source 2 – and had a big ol’ yarn about ’em. That thread turned into a useful resource for some folks, so I made it a Cohost post, and now Cohost is going away so here…

ask: level design tools
i have many such opinions but i’ve spent so much time expressing them over the years that i’ve somewhat burned out on it. being extremely correct is not in itself very satisfying
